Frank Tate (boxer)

Amateur

Tate won the 1983 National Golden Gloves and was the U.S. Amateur champion. In the same year he came to a country fight Alexander Koshkin, Soviet Union. At the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, he won the gold medal in the light middleweight; among other things, a highly controversial final victory over the Canadians Shawn O'Sullivan, who had defeated him in the final battle of the North American Championships in 1983. He was down for the count in the second round twice, so even his trainer Emanuel Steward was the score embarrassing. His record was 125-15.

Professional

Tate was in the same year professional middleweight, won his first 22 fights and then on October 10, 1987 for the vacant IBF title, the middleweight champion Marvin Hagler did not want to defend against the undefeated Michael Olajide over 15 rounds on points. He lost the belt after two title defenses in 1988 against the undefeated southpaw Michael Nunn by knockout.

Then he went up into the newly introduced super middleweight and lost there in January 1990 a fight for the vacant IBF world championship against Lindell Holmes. Then he moved to the light heavyweight division, beating 1991 Uriah Grant, Yawe Davis and 1992 Olympic gold medalist Andrew Maynard.

On September 29, 1992, he then punched against Virgil Hill for the vacant WBA heavyweight title and lost on points over twelve rounds. In the rematch in 1994 he was inferior Hill.

In 1997, he won against the German Norbert Nieroba the insignificant WBU title he never defended, however. After a knockout loss to David Telesco he finished his career in 1998.
