Frantz Reichel

François- Étienne trolleybus " Frantz " Reichel ( born March 16, 1871 in Paris, † March 24, 1932 ) was a French athlete who came into existence in different sports, but mainly as a rugby union player and athlete. He also worked as a sports reporter and as an official of various associations.

Biography

Reichel attended the Lycée Lakanal in Sceaux. Later, he worked full-time as a journalist for Le Figaro ( he was there founded the sports department ), Le Vélo and Le Sport illustré. From 1890 to 1893, he won four French league titles in track and field. As Special Rapporteur of Le Vélo he was in 1896 sent to Athens to take part in the first Olympics of the modern era. In the 400 -meter run, he left as a third party of the leader. In the finals of the 110- meter hurdles race, he would have been entitled to start, but he did not appear and instead supported his compatriot Albin Lermusiaux run a marathon.

Also successful Reichel was as a rugby player. In 1892 and 1900, he was champion of France with the Racing Club de France. At the Summer Olympics in Paris in 1900 he won the gold medal. Then he played until 1906 for the Sporting Club Universitaire de France, the Rugby department he co-founded the year before.

Reichel was the first European journalist who mitflog in an airplane. On 3 October 1908 he scored near Le Mans together with his pilot Wilbur Wright set a new world record for continuous flight.

1901 was Reichel co-founder of the French National Olympic Committee, 1903 founder of the French boxing federation and 1924 founder of the French Baseball and Softball Association. In 1924 he founded the French association of sports journalists, he was also Secretary General of the Sports Federation USFSA.

At the Summer Olympics in Paris in 1924 Reichel was as press officer to the Organizing Committee. From 1924 to 1932 Reichel president of the International Sports Journalists' Association AIPS. Named after him is the Coupe Frantz Reichel, the French rugby union championship of the U21 juniors.
