Franz Salmhofer

Franz Salmhofer (born 22 January 1900 in Vienna, † September 22, 1975 same place ) was a multi-award -winning Austrian composer, conductor and poet.

From 1929 to 1945 he was Kapellmeister at the Burgtheater, from 1945 to 1954 then director of the Vienna State Opera, then at the Volksoper in Vienna ( 1956-1963 ). Salmhofer mainly composed stage works, which emulated on the tradition of the late Romantic period, but with Heiteres Herbarium by Karl Heinrich Waggerl for example, a setting of contemporary poetry.

His grave is located in Vienna's Central Cemetery (Group C 32, Number 41 ). In 1989 in Vienna Liesing ( 23rd district ) was named the Salmhoferstrasse and in 1998 in Vienna Alsergrund (9th district ) of the Franz- Salmhofer Square after him.
