Fredrik Stang

Fredrik Stang (* December 27 1867 in Christiania, now Oslo, † November 15, 1941 ) was a Norwegian lawyer and Conservative politician.

Life

Stang, a son of the Prime Minister Emil Stang and grandson of Prime Minister Frederik Stang, was after studying law in Oslo as well as in Germany and England in 1897 professor of law at the University of Christiania, where he primarily focused on retail and commercial law. As a member of the Conservative Party Høyre he was from 1905 to 1908 in the City Council of Christiania, and from 1906 to 1909 Member of the Norwegian Parliament Storting. From 1908 to 1911 he was chairman of the party and joined in 1912 as Minister of Justice led by Jens Bratlie a government, but had to resign again already in early 1913. Then Stang took his chair again. He held office from 1921 to 1927 as rector of the University of Oslo and in 1932 was given emeritus status.

Stang was since December 7, 1894 with Caroline, born Schweigaard married. His son was Christian Schweigaard Stang.

1918 Stang received an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen, and later honorary doctorates from the Universities of Paris and Uppsala. He was from 1900 a member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences. From 1921 he was a member, from 1922 to 1940 chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
