Frierfjord

The fjord system in Grenland

The Frier Fjord ( or freezing fjords ) is a fjord in the Grenland in the Norwegian county of Telemark. It extends from Brevik to the mouth of Porsgrunnelva. The mouth ( Brevikstrømmen ) is 300 m wide and is spanned by the Breviksbrua. A little further within spans the newer Grenlandsbrua ( European route 18) the fjord.

On the fjord is a busy ship traffic, for example, to Rafnes in Bamble, Norsk Hydro in Porsgrunn and until its closure in 2006, to Norske Skog Union in Skien.

The name probably comes from the Old Norse Frier and means the Beautiful.
