Frithuwald of Bernicia

Frithuwald (also Frithuwold, Friduuald, FrioÞowald; † 585 ) was from 579 until his death King of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Bernicia.

Life

In the earlier research Frithuwald was sometimes interpreted as son of King Ida of Bernicia. The exact government data and the chronology in the line of succession is not clearly backed up because contemporary sources are missing. According to present knowledge, he followed likely to Theodric 579 and ruled until 585

In the year 579 King Theodric fell in a battle against Urien of Rheged and Owein fab Frithuwald succeeded to the throne. For more information regarding his reign were not delivered. Frithuwald died in the year 585 as his successor shall Hussa, who was possibly his brother.
