Theodric of Bernicia

Theodric (also Ðeodric, þeodric, Theodoric, Flamddwyn (flame sensor); † 579 ) was 572-579 King of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Bernicia.

Life

Theodric considered as son of King Ida of Bernicia and Queen Bear yet. The exact government data and the chronology between the governments of his brothers is not clearly backed up because contemporary sources are missing. Sometimes he was ranked as the successor of Hussa and predecessor of Æthelfrith in the period around 586/593. According to present knowledge, he followed probably Æthelric 572 and ruled until 579

Theodric raided the Britannic UK Rheged with his sons, but was defeated by King Urien and his son Owain at Argoed Llwyfain. An alliance of the British kings Urien, Rhydderch Hael of Strathclyde, Gwallog ap Llaennog of Elmet and Gododdin of Morcant (or Bryneich ) then fell into Bernicia. This was followed by struggles with varying output. According to tradition Theodric should finally have been besieged by the enemy force three days in vain for the island Medgawdd ( Lindisfarne ). Disagreement of the British kings, which culminated in the assassination Uriens by an ally, led to the lifting of the siege and ended the campaign. After some historians have argued, it was King Hussa ( 585-592 ), or possibly Æthelfrith ( 592-616 ), who was besieged on Lindisfarne.

In the year 579 Theodric fell in a battle against Owain of Rheged. After Theodrics death followed Frithuwald, which was sometimes interpreted by the earlier research than his brother on the throne.
