Frits Lugt

Frits Lugt Frederik Johannes Lugt actually ( born May 4, 1884 in Amsterdam, † 15 July 1970 ) was a Franco- Dutch art historian and art collector.

Life

Lugt worked at an Amsterdam auction house. He married Jacoba Klever 1910 ( 1888-1969 ), with whom he lived in Maartensdijk in the province of Utrecht and had five children. In the twenties, he was commissioned to catalog the drawings and prints of the Paris museums and libraries. Jacoba Lugt entered 1935 a substantial legacy that made ​​it possible for both to act as an art collector. Because of their Mennonite faith they had to flee via Switzerland to the United States, where he could work at Oberlin College after the German occupation of the Netherlands. The residual in the Netherlands part of their collection was stolen by the department Mühlmann. After the war they settled in Paris, where, in 1947 founded the "Fondation Custodia " and helped in 1957 the "Institute Néerlandais " in Paris to set up.
