Furmint

Furmint is an ancient white grape variety whose origin is not yet fully understood. They probably originated from a cross between a Heunisch seedling with an unknown Hungarian vine. Other assumptions indicate an origin from the southeastern Balkans (Romania, Moldova), where the variety is still grown.

Origin

The first mention of it is in 1623 in Hungary. There is so far no evidence, but many legends regarding its origin. Among the best known those that the vine of Italian immigrants under King Béla IV to have been brought to Hungary in the 13th century. Another, more plausible explanation is that they should have been brought back from the Venetian Princess Aurora Formentini to the wedding with the Hungarian magnates Ádám Batthyány in the 17th century.

Properties

The variety of drives quite early, has a vigorous growth, but ripens very late. This results in a frost susceptibility, whereby the vine places special demands on the climate.
