Gale Bruno van Albada

Gale Bruno van Albada ( born March 28, 1912 in Amsterdam, † 18 December 1972 ) was a Dutch astronomer.

He earned his Ph.D. in 1945 at Anton Pannekoek at the University of Amsterdam. He shared Pannekoek communist views and his brother Piet van Albada was in the 30s, a contemporary of Marinus van der Lubbe.

Van Albada was from May 1949 to July 1958 Director of Bosscha observatory on Java. There he married on August 1, 1950, the Harvard graduate and astronomer Elsa van Dien, who also worked in Bosscha since 1949. Due to the political situation, the family was forced to leave the island in July 1958 and returned to the Netherlands. Van Albada 1960 the successor of Pannekoek his mentor as head of the astronomical department at the University of Amsterdam.

The crater Van Albada on the Earth's moon and discovered on September 28, 1935 Asteroid (2019) Van Albada are named after him.
