Galmiz is a municipality in the lake district (French: District du Lac ) of the canton of Fribourg in Switzerland. The French name of the municipality is Charmey ( Lac), in contrast to the former municipality in the district of Gruyère Charmey.

Geography

Galmiz is located on 441 m above sea level. M., 4 km north-east of the district town of Murten (air line). The village extends into the hollow of the Galmizbaches on the southern edge of the Great Marsh, at the foot of the height of Murten forest, east of Lake Murten Fribourg plateau in the north.

The area of ​​8.9 km ² large municipality area includes a section of the Great Marsh. The main part of the territory occupied by the intensively farmed level of the Great Marsh, the (French: Canal de la Broye) from Galmizkanal and the Biberekanal to Broye canal is dewatered. To Galmiz include the hallways Galmizmoos, Neumatten, Turbenmoos, castle moss and posterior horn. To the west of the municipality floor extends over the 1 km wide belt of forests Le Chablais up on Lake Murten, who owns a with stock of dense reed bank here. The lake shore line of Galmiz is around 2 km from the outflow of the Broye in the north to the mouth of a short drainage channel in the south.

From the municipality surface 1997 7 % was attributable to settlements, 20 % of forest and shrubs, 71% to agriculture and about 2% was unproductive land.

Population

With 630 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Galmiz one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Fribourg. The population of Galmiz amounted in 1850 to 422 residents in 1900 to 467 inhabitants. During the 20th century, the population fluctuated in the range of 430-500 inhabitants, before a decrease of 20% was registered during the 1970s. Since 1980 (393 inhabitants) a significant population growth was recorded again.

Languages

Of the residents 90.0 % are German, 5.4 % French-speaking and 1.3 % speak Italian ( as of 2000). This Galmiz is mostly German speaking today. The first documents about the place and field names indicate an originally French speaking village. Probably the majority ratio between French and German has swept over the course of the 17th century.

Economy

Galmiz was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Even today, the farming, growing vegetables and fruit culture have an important place in the economic structure of the population. 1946 Cultivation and Processing Cooperative was established for organic vegetables.

More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available. In Galmiz be among builders, horticulture, electrical industry, the food industry and a carpenter have settled. In 2005 Galmiz fell into the national headlines because the U.S. pharmaceutical company Amgen wanted to settle in the agricultural zone of the Great Marsh. The rezoning of fertile farmland to urban land was disputed. Since the end of January 2006 it is certain that the Group will build its manufacturing facility in Ireland.

In recent decades, the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the regions of Murten and Bern.

Traffic

The community is conveniently moderately well developed. It lies on the main road 22 to Kerzers. About 2 km from the center toward Murten leads them to the main road 1 Bern -Lausanne. There is also the connection is to the A1 motorway ( Bern -Lausanne ), which crosses the municipality on the Galmiz Viaduct. On 12 June 1876, the railway line from Murten to Lyss was taken with a station in Galmiz in operation.

History

The territory of Galmiz was settled very early. It was crossed by the Roman road which had Aventicum connected to Petinesca. Was located on this street a Roman villa which was probably inhabited from 50 to 250 AD.

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1242 under the name Chalmitis; of 1340 the name Charmey is preserved. The place name is derived from the Latin word calma ( wasteland ). Since the Middle Ages Galmiz was under the rule of Murten. 1475 reached the village as part of the bailiwick of Murten under the joint administration of the estates of Bern and Fribourg. It was devastated during the Burgundian Wars.

After the collapse of the ancien régime (1798 ) Galmiz came to the Canton of Fribourg. During the Helvetic Republic and the subsequent time it belonged to the district of Murten, before it was incorporated in 1848 with the new cantonal constitution in the lake district.
