Administrative Divisions

Namru is made up of three settlements. These are:

  • Kyongbo (琼普 村), seat of the municipal government;
  • Garyarsa (噶 尔雅沙 村);
  • Tangra (塘 热 村).

Garyarsa

Garyarsa (噶 尔雅沙 村, also:噶 尔亚沙 村), formerly known as Gartok, was an important trading center on the more than 1500 kilometers long caravan route from Leh in Ladakh Gartok, the monastery Tradün, Shigatse and Gyantse to Lhasa.

The village lies on the right bank of the headwaters of the Indus in the west of Tibet in a wide valley to 4440 m altitude at the foot of the Kailash mountain range. The existing out of the remnants of the once important town today town is noted by the leading past at a great distance on the other side G 219 national road barely.

Gartok was a crossroads of caravan routes and a meeting place, which was visited by traders from the surrounding countries. The place was, however, only a few houses around which clustered a large number of tents in summer. Gartok was then the most important place in Western Tibet. In winter Gartok had few inhabitants, however.

In the 19th century Tibet for Europeans in general and especially for Brits was a forbidden land. This was for them (with few exceptions) also Gartok unreachable, while the local traders and pilgrims from all the countries in the Karakoram and Himalayan largely easily cross the borders and could get to Gartok. Gartok was from the stories known, but not its exact location nor the topography of the caravan routes. Therefore Gartok was one of the first destinations to which the British sent so-called pundits to obtain reliable geographical information. Gartok appeared to the British so important that Major Francis Younghusband a clause in the agreement dated August 3, 1904 recorded following the US-led him British Tibet campaign, which Gartok stood open beside Yadong Gyantse and the British - Indian trade (although this hardly had practical consequences ). The immediately sent by Gartok Younghusband expedition under Captains CHD Ryder and C. G. Rawling but remained on their way from Gyantse to Shimla only one day in Gartok on. This was sufficient for a finding that the already largely abandoned in the early winter place will not play a major political significance.
