Gäu District

The district Gaeu ( " the Gaeu » called ) in the canton of Solothurn is part of the canton of Solothurn Gäus.

Location

The Gaeu is bounded on the north by the first chain of the Jura Mountains and the south by the River Aare. It is intersected by the two main motorways in Switzerland: the east- west axis A1 and the North-South axis A2, which intersect at the motorway junction Härkingen. Various logistics centers have on the highways and the railway line accumulated in the last decades. Away from the main roads, the Gaeu has largely maintained its rural character.

District capital is Oensingen. The district Gaeu together with the district of Thal in the Amtei Thal- Gaeu, whose main town is Balsthal. The district is not to be confused with the ancient county of Buchsgau, which also included parts of present-day district of Olten, see Solothurnisches Gaeu.
