Geandry Garzón

Geandry Garzón Caballero ( born November 5, 1983 in Santiago de Cuba ) is a Cuban wrestler. Vice World Champion 2007 in free style at lightweight.

Career

Geandrey Garzón Caballero was discovered in childhood by talent scouts and brought to the rings. Since 1993, he engaged in this sport. After he was several times Cuban champion in freestyle at junior age, he was delegated to the top club Cerro Pelado Havana. He is coached by Alberto Filiberto Delyada and Julio Cesar Castellano. The 1.73 m tall athlete weighs about 70 kg and Raul Cascaret Fonseca, a former Cuban Wrestling World Champion as a model. In the junior age Geandry Garzón Caballero ranking yet in two styles, since 2003, but he fully concentrates on the free style. In addition to the rings, he holds no other profession.

At the Pan American Junior Championships in 2002 in Bogotá, he started at lightweight in two styles. In Greco-Roman. Style, he won ahead of James Woodall from the United States and Francisco Ceveda from Mexico and in free style he came up behind James Woodall and before Roberto Piedra from Colombia to 2nd place.

In 2003, Junior World Champion in free style Geandry Garzón Caballero in Istanbul. He needed to six wins. In the final he defeated while Suren Markosjan from Armenia.

In 2004, he failed to qualify for the Cuban Olympic team. His next start at an international championship, therefore, took place in 2005 at the Pan American Championships in Guatemala City. At the light- weight, clear style, he won it before Edison Hurtado Lerma from Colombia and Ron Tarquin from the United States. At the World Championships this year in Budapest, he had on a day six heavy fighting contest, before he was certain of winning the bronze medal. He defeated one after Zhirayr Hovannesjan from Armenia, Albert Batirow from Belarus, Batzorig Buyanjaav from Mongolia and Kazuhiko Ikematsu from Japan. In the semifinals, he suffered a defeat against Machatsch Murtasalijew from Russia. In the battle for third place he suggested Viktor Bilokoputrin from Ukraine.

2006 denied Geandry Garzón Caballero a World Cup tournament in Sari / Iran and arrived there behind Ugur Cadiz from Turkey and before Hassan Salman Tahmasebi from Iran to 3rd place. At the World Championships this year in Guangzhou, China, he won again the bronze medal in lightweight. He was victorious in his first fight against Jin Kyuk - Baek from Korea and lost in his second against Bill Zadick from the United States. Since Bill Zadick world champion, he could continue to fight in the repechage and secured there with wins over Elar Hani from Estonia, Fred Jessey from Nigeria and Albert Batirow the 3rd place.

In 2007 Geandry Garzón Caballero won both at the Pan American Championships in San Salvador as well as at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro each at lightweight. In San Salvador before Ricardo Roberty of Venezuela, Bill Zadick & Chris Prickett of Canada and Rio de Janeiro against Edison Hurtado Lerma, Doug Schwab from the United States and Pedro Soto Cordero of Puerto Rico. In the subsequent World Championships in Baku Geandry Garzón Caballero managed by winning the Vice World Champion title then the biggest success of his career. Along the way, he defeated Hishan Al Thaalebi from Iraq, Batzorig Buyanjaav from Mongolia, Doug Schwab un Otar Tuschuschwili from Georgia. In the final he defeated the Turks, Ramazan Sahin just on points.

In 2008 Geandry Garzón Caballero won again in Colorado Springs at the Pan American Championships before Haiston Garcia from Canada, Ricardo Hurtado Lerma & Chris Bono from the United States. The competition at the Olympic Games in Beijing began then not good for him. He met in his first fight on world champion Ramazan Sahin, whom he defeated again on points. Since Sahin Olympic champion, but could continue wrestling in the repechage and won against Mehdi Taghavi Karmani from Iran. But then he lost against Otar Tuschuschwili. He no longer thus reached the fighting for the medals and landed on the 5th Place.
