Gene Perla

Gene Perla (* March 1, 1940 in Hackensack / New Jersey) is an American jazz bassist.

Perla first learned the piano, then played during his time in high school trombone. He initially underwent a degree in industrial engineering from the University of Toledo. Only then he decided to become a musician, studied at Berklee College of Music and moved to bass. He was then a member of the band Los Muchachos, who was also Don Alias ​​. 1969 to 1970 he was a member of Woody Herman's orchestra, then worked with the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra, Sarah Vaughan and from 1971 to 1973 with Elvin Jones.

Mid-1970s, the label founded Perla PM ( Perla sounds), and shortly thereafter, the label run Plug and produced recordings among others Dave Liebman, Elvin Jones, Steve Grossman, Pat LaBarbera and Jerry Bergonzi. Since 1975 he has been working with the group Stone Alliance ( with Steve Grossman and Don Alias ​​). He also appeared as a sideman, inter alia, Willie Bob, Jan Hammer, Jeremy Steig, Nina Simone, Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins on. Since the late 1990s, he has been a member of the Fine Wine Trio with Richard Wyands and Bobby Kapp.

Perla taught at the William Paterson University, and is currently at Lehigh University.
