Gennady Yanayev

Gennady Ivanovich Yanayev (Russian Геннадий Иванович Янаев, born August 26, 1937 in Perewos; † 24 September 2010 in Moscow ) was a Soviet politician and Vice- President of the USSR.

Life

Education, Occupation, Komsomol

1959 graduated Yanayev the Gorky Institute of Agriculture with specialization in agricultural mechanical engineer. Since 1959 he worked as the head of a mechanized agricultural unit in the region Gorky.

He worked from 1963 to 1968 in the Komsomol, the youth wing of the CPSU. He was from 1968 to 1980 full-time Chairman of the USSR Committee of Youth Organizations.

Rise to Power

From 1986 to 1990 he was in the All-Union Central Council of Trade Unions secretary (until 1989 ), served as Vice Chairman and then as Chairman.

It was Mikhail Gorbachev, who fostered his rise in the center of power. Gorbachev wrote in 1995: "That was my big mistake ." So Yanayev was from 14 July 1990 to August 24, 1991 Secretary of the Central Committee and also a full member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union ( CPSU ), the most powerful political body of the USSR. From 1990 until August 1991 he was also vice president of the Soviet Union and therefore a representative of Gorbachev in the state office.

The August coup

Gained fame Yanayev as chairman of the State Committee for the State of Emergency and co-initiator of the August coup against Gorbachev in August 1991. On 19 August 1991, the Soviet news agency TASS reported an alleged disease Mikhail Gorbachev and the assumption of official duties by Yanayev. The attempt of the coup, Gorbachev to move to resign, failed. After three days, the coup was over, when its suppression especially Boris Yeltsin excelled. The result of the conspiracy was: Gorbachev waned power, the Communist Party was dissolved and the end of 1991 the USSR. Yanayev and his Mitputschisten were sentenced to prison terms. Back in 1993 was the bail for health reasons. In 1994, he was amnestied by the Duma.

Yanayev was married and had two daughters

Janajev was an advisor to the Committee of veterans and invalids of the public service. He was head of the IMF assistance for children with disabilities. In recent years he was head of the Department of National History and International Relations of the Russian International Tourism Academy.

Yanayev died in 2010 in a Moscow hospital of lung cancer. He was buried in the cemetery Trojekurowo in Moscow.
