Gentleman of the Bedchamber

The gentleman of the bedchamber was an important official in the court of the English Kingdom from the 11th century. This title was later also used in the Kingdom of Great Britain.

Obligations

Important tasks consisted of the king to use for private meals, help with dressing, guarding the bedchamber and toilet and make the king society.

Since 1660 the Office of the First Gentleman of the Bedchamber was closely connected with that of the Groom of the Stole.

The term gentleman of the bedchamber in French is Gentilhomme de la Chambre. This exercised the duties and responsibilities of the Grand Chamberlain of France during his absence from the court. These included, inter alia, monitoring of the royal physicians and the hospitality of the king.
