Georg Gaßmann

Georg Gassmann ( born May 28, 1910 in Marburg, † August 5, 1987 ) was a German politician, 1951-1970 Mayor of Marburg and member of the Hessian Parliament (SPD).

Education and work

Georg Gassmann studied after high school from 1929 to 1932 law in Berlin and Marburg. In 1933, he was briefly imprisoned for political reasons and excluded from the promotion. He worked from 1934 as a clerk and strip from 1939 to 1945 his war service. Subsequently, he was a prisoner of war until 1946.

Policy

Georg Gassmann in 1946 the mayor and elected in 1951 as mayor of Marburg. He held until 1971 this office.

Georg Gassmann left the motorway build by Marburg middle and separated the city so in two parts. Gaßmann was also known for his plan to break down the traditional upper town with the old half-timbered houses and replace them with a car-friendly city. This plan was not carried out. Instead, let Gaßmann successor Drechsler rehabilitate the upper town and become the showpiece of Marburg.

From 1 December 1950 to 30 November 1970, he was also a member of the Hesse Landtag.

In 1954 he was a member of the 2nd Federal Assembly.

Honors

Georg Gassmann was from 1971 an honorary citizen of the city, the carrier Wilhelm -Leuschner- Medal of the State of Hesse and the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

After Gaßmann the 12,000 -seat Georg- Gassmann stadium was named in the Marburg south.
