Georg Hartmann

Georg Hartmann ( * February 9, 1489 in Eggolsheim near Forchheim, † April 9, 1564 in Nuremberg ) was a German mathematician and instrument manufacturers.

Hartmann discovered in 1544 the inclination of the geomagnetic field. This discovery was made public but hardly known. Only Robert Norman designed years later the first Inklinationsbussole.

Hartmann studied in Cologne and then became a priest. The verfertigten he belonged instruments quadrants, compasses, sundials, terrestrial and celestial globes, astrolabes, gun towers and caliber rods.

In Forchheim Georg Hartmann junior high school is named after him.
