George Barbier (actor)

George W. Barber ( born November 19, 1864 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, † July 19, 1945 in Hollywood, California ) was an American film and theater actor.

Life and work

Originally wanted to become a priest George Barbier, this was, however, on a theater career. First, he began his career at the opera, and was later seen on tour with theater companies and on Broadway in nearly twenty productions 1900-1931. This includes, among others, the pieces The Hunchback of Notre -Dame and The were FrontPage. In any case, he began his film career in 1930, with a large supporting role in the film The Big Pond with Maurice Chevalier. With Chevalier he turned even more films, such as The Merry Widow in 1934. Though he was already 66 years old on his debut, he quickly became a sought-after actor, who would work for all five major Hollywood studios in nearly 90 films.

The burly barber played mostly unable confident, serious fathers and businessmen in almost all genres, but especially in comedies. In His Secretary ( 1936) with Clark Gable, he embodied the media mogul Underwood, on the side of Gary Cooper in The Adventures of Marco Polo ( 1938), the ruler Kublai Khan and in the Oscar-winning biography Yankee Doodle Dandy ( 1942), the theater producer Abraham Erlanger. Until his sudden death on the night of July 19, 1945 at his home in Hollywood barber was as an actor in the business. About his personal life is only known that he was married to Caroline Thatcher.
