George Chaloupka

George Chaloupka ( born September 6, 1932 in Týniště nad Orlicí, Czechoslovakia, † October 18, 2011 in Darwin, Australia ) was a Czech- Australian explorer of the Aboriginal rock art.

Life

Jiří Chaloupka grew up with two brothers to in Týniště nad Orlicí. The younger brother died early. After the takeover by the Communists Jiří Chaloupka co-migrated with his older brother in 1948 to Germany to Australia, where he first lived in Perth, Melbourne and finally in Darwin. Since 1973 he has worked as a curator at the Northern Territory Museum and documented over 3500 rock art in Kakadu National Park and Arnhem Land.

To promote and support research and conservation of rock art in Arnhem Land in 2008, he founded the George Chaloupka Fellowship.
