George, Duke of Mecklenburg

Was, Duke of Mecklenburg, Count of Carlow († July 6, 1963 in Sigmaringen * 22 Septemberjul / October 4 1899greg in Oranienbaum Palace in Saint Petersburg.. ): Georg Alexander Michael Friedrich Wilhelm Albert Theodor Franz, Duke of Mecklenburg, to 1950 the only son of the Duke Georg Alexander of Mecklenburg [- Strelitz ] (1859-1909) and his wife Natalya, Countess of Carlow ( 1858-1921 ). His godparents were the first Grand Duke Friedrich Wilhelm (1819-1904) and Grand Duchess Augusta Caroline ( 1822-1916 ). As his parents' marriage was morganatic, he initially wore only the title of Count of Carlow.

Life

After his father's death in 1909 his brother Duke Carl Michael was appointed by the Tsar Nicholas II and the Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich V. guardian. 1912 Count Georg of Carlow was as Heir Russian citizen due to Russian law. After the recognition of the Soviet Union by the Western powers in 1922 he was stateless and remained so until the 1950s.

After the revolution in Russia, the Caucasus, the family fled first to France, where his mother died in Cannes in 1921, then moved to Denmark and 1923 on the Mecklenburg -owned castle in Remplin Remplin at Malchin, where they until the destruction of the castle and the expulsion lived by the Nazis in 1940. During this time, George studied political science and received his Dr. rer. pol. at the Albert- Ludwigs- University in Freiburg im Breisgau.

In 1920 he married Irina Mikhailovna Rajewskaja ( 1892-1955 ). They had four children, one of which already died in childhood. In the same year he converted to the Roman Catholic Church.

1928 George was adopted by his uncle Duke Charles Michael, with the consent of the chief of the Tsar and the house of the former Grand Duke of Mecklenburg -Schwerin and was named Duke of Mecklenburg, but renounced his throne anyway only theoretical claims. From 1934 to 1963 he was head of the House of Mecklenburg- Strelitz.

During the period of National Socialism, the family of George, Duke of Mecklenburg because of belonging to the international aristocracy, her Russian ancestors and " political Catholicism " was followed. In 1940 the castle burnt down Remplin, presumably by arson of the Nazis. 1944 George Duke of Mecklenburg was incarcerated in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in solitary confinement.

In the immediate postwar period he lived in Sigmaringen and was regarded as a mentor monarchist aspirations in southwest Germany.

After a family internal appointment he resigned on 18 December 1950 to the previously run as a suffix name " Count of Carlow ".

After the death of his first wife he married in 1956 Charlotte of Habsburg -Lorraine ( 1921-1989), the daughter of the last Austrian Emperor Karl I.

In 1953, he tried to get a position in the Foreign Service. In 1956 there was the idea to make him the German representatives in the Committee of the International Tracing Service in Arolsen. The proposal was withdrawn.

He died on 6 July 1963 at Prinzessinnenpalais in Sigmaringen.
