George, Emperor of Trebizond

George Komnenos (* 1255, † after 1284) was from 1266 to 1280 and Emperor of Trebizond Großkomnene.

Life

George was a son of Emperor Manuel I of Trebizond from his third marriage to the Trebizond noblewoman Irena Syrikaina.

In 1266 he succeeded his half-brother Andronikos II to the throne. When he in 1280 with his army went to the mountains of the Taurus on one of his campaigns against the Turkmen, he was betrayed by his own nobles. These were raised by a sudden attack of the enemy on George's troops not to fight, but turned to flee, leaving George, who was left beaten, the Turkmen, which led him into captivity. His younger brother John II took advantage of the absence of George immediately to settle this as Emperor and to install himself as the successor.

Georg in 1284 released by the Turkmens from captivity. Since it was known the Turkmen, that George in Trebizond could still count on a following among disaffected nobles, they hoped that this step due to the anticipated battle between George and John II to the imperial throne disturbances in Trebizond lead to and thus the Trebizond would weaken state. George's attempt to reclaim the throne, but failed and was recruited by him among his followers army was smashed. While it succeeded Georg initially to escape a renewed captivity by fleeing to the mountains, but he was put there and taken after some time. From his later life nothing is known.
