George Hardy (ice hockey)

William George Hardy, CM (* 1895 in Edmonton, Alberta, † 28 August 1979 ) was a Canadian ice hockey coach and functionary.

Career

George Hardy graduated from the University of Toronto. From 1920 to 1964 he worked at the University of Alberta. He began as a lecturer in Classical Studies and was from 1938 until the end of his university career mainly responsible for this area. From 1922 to 1926 he was also coach of the Golden Bears, the ice hockey team of the University of Alberta and helped in the implementation of the construction of a covered ice arena in 1927. He was very involved as a member of the Alberta Amateur Hockey Association. From 1938 to 1940 he served as President of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association and represented Canada at the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. From 1947 to 1948 he was vice-president of the IIHF and then from 1948 to 1951 for three years its president. In 1973 he was inducted as a member in the Order of Canada because of his contribution to the education system and the amateur hockey in Canada and received from the University of Alberta honorary doctorate. Posthumously, he was also admitted to the University of Alberta Sports Wall of Fame, and in 1989 the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 1987.
