Career

Role of James Bond

After the departure of Sean Connery in the James Bond series producer Albert R. Broccoli urgently sought a new cast for the Bond character. Lazenby bought a Rolex and went to the same tailor as Sean Connery, to a suit to buy, in which he wanted to apply for the role. Apparently he bought a model which, although made for Connery, but was never picked up by this. After even the hair in the style of Sean Connery had it cut, he introduced himself to Harry Saltzman, and he came for the James Bond role on the short list of candidates. In test shots Lazenby accidentally broke a stuntman 's nose. This impressed Broccoli and tipped the scales that he committed Lazenby as the new James Bond.

During the filming, there was slight tension, as Lazenby felt as the star of the movie and wanted to be treated that way. However, the director took little time for him. Producer Broccoli finally gave him clearly to understand that he only would be a star when the audience would accept him as such. Supposedly, there was also tension between the main characters Diana Rigg and George Lazenby, but this was denied by both.

1969 appeared in Her Majesty's Secret, the first and only James Bond film with Lazenby in the role of secret agents. For his performance, he received a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Young Actor.

Lazenby gave the figure of James Bond for not up to date and expressed his opinion in interviews. He had allowed himself to grow longer hair and wore a full beard. United Artists felt, however, that he looked at public appearances as James Bond, and refused to let him participate in a trip across the USA to advertise the film. Lazenby then traveled at their own expense to the United States, but was hardly noticed by the press.

While the advertising for You Only Live was tailored to Sean Connery twice more, the focus was on Her Majesty's Secret on the character of James Bond and neglected the main character. In retrospect, some made involved in production and this fact responsible for ensuring that George Lazenby was not as good as Sean Connery received by the public.

The production company Eon Productions Ltd.. Lazenby offered a contract for, depending on the source location, five or six films, but he did not sign because he had problems in clarifying the contractual clauses.

Although Her Majesty's Secret was an economic success, he remained behind the box office of the previous films. It was decided to produce the next James Bond film with a new leading man.
