George M. Wertz

George M. Wertz (* July 19, 1856 in Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, † November 19, 1928 ) was an American politician. Between 1923 and 1925 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

George Wertz attended the public schools of his home, the Ebensburg Academy and the National Normal School in Lebanon (Ohio ). Between 1876 and 1884 he worked as a teacher and then until 1894 as a school principal. From 1893 to 1896 he was District Council and from 1897 to 1901 in Cambria County Sheriff. Politically, he joined the Republican Party. From 1908 to 1912 Wertz sat in the Senate of Pennsylvania, he served as Chairman since 1911. He has also worked in the newspaper business and headed 1911-1917, co-founded the newspaper he Johnstown Daily Leader. In the years 1914-1916 he held the office of Comptroller in Cambria County.

In the congressional elections of 1922, Wertz was in the 20th electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Edward Schroeder Brooks on March 4, 1923. Since he was not nominated by his party for re-election in 1924, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1925. After his time in the U.S. House of Representatives, George Wertz operated in the real estate industry. He died on November 19, 1928 in his hometown of Johnstown.
