Gerard De Geer

Gerard Jacob De Geer ( born October 2, 1858 in Stockholm, † July 23, 1943 ) was a Swedish geologist.

Life

De Geer studied at Uppsala University where he graduated in 1879 as a candidate. In 1882 De Geer worked as an assistant at the Swedish Geological Survey, 1885 before he was appointed geologist. In this capacity, he discovered, among other things, a lime and kaolin on Ivö clack on the southern Swedish island Ivö.

In 1893 he received an honorary doctorate in Uppsala and in 1897 lecturer and from 1904 to 1924, finally professor of geology at the University of Stockholm. From 1900-1905 De Geer was a member of the Second Chamber of the Swedish Parliament for the Liberala samlingsparti. From 1902 De Geer was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, from 1918 Member of the Royal Physio Graphic Society in Lund, in 1921 Honorary Member of the Kungliga och Vitterhets History Antikvitets Academies and since 1922 a member of the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala.

De Geer has also made as a cartographer of Spitsbergen a name. He organized and accompanied expeditions in the years 1882, 1896, 1899, 1901, 1908 and 1910 the archipelago.

Work

In 1924 De Geer the Geochronological Institute in Stockholm. In the course of his research, he founded the Warvenchronologie. With this method ( counting the bands or Warventonschichten ) he proved in 1912 that the Eisrückgang in Scandinavia took place within 5000 years.

In 1920 he was awarded the Wollaston Medal of the Geological Society of London.
