Gérard Latortue

Gérard Latortue ( born June 19, 1934 in Gonaïves ) is Haitian politician and served from March 2004 to May 2006 Prime Minister of the country.

An Election Commission struck the 69 -year-olds before as head of a transitional government. He accepted the call and returned a day later from his exile in Florida. Latortue takes over from its predecessor Yvon Neptune, who had led the government under the ousted president Jean -Bertrand Aristide.

Latortue studied in Paris and was from 1961 professor at the law school in Port -au -Prince. In 1963 he fled from the dictator Francois Duvalier into exile. During his years abroad, he worked as a Professor of Economics at the Inter American University in Puerto Rico and as a senior official at the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO ). In 1988 he returned from his exile in Florida, USA to Haiti and became foreign minister in the cabinet of a few months overthrown by the military President Leslie Manigat. Most recently, he was Director General of the Association of Universities and research centers in the Caribbean and also television presenter for programs in the Haitian Creole language in Miami.

Latortue declared aim was to lead a government of national reconciliation. At his first public appearance after the election as Prime Minister, he received an enthusiastic welcome in his hometown of Gonaives on 21 March 2004 by 3,000 people. He held a minute of silence for all the victims of the revolution and promised the citizens of drinking water and the construction of houses.
