Germán Cueto

Germán Gutiérrez Cueto (* 8th or 9th February 1883 in Mexico City; † February 14, 1975 ) was a Mexican painter and sculptor. He came in 1968 to the Academia de Artes and is one of the founding members.

Biography

Gutiérrez Cueto came paternal from a wealthy, traditionally socially active and intellectual family, which originally came from the Spanish Cantabria. His mother was Mexican. From 1916 to 1917 he learned in Spain by his cousin María Gutiérrez Blanchard first modern art. After a short stay at the Academia de San Carlos in 1919 he continued his sculptural studies autodidact continues.

He married the artist Lola Cueto (1897-1978), with whom he had two children. With her he went from 1927 to 1932 to Paris, where he made some acquaintances in the art world, in particular with the artist group " Cercle et Carré ". In Paris, he and Lola were also the first time with the production of puppets and puppetry in touch.

After the five-year stay in Europe, he turned to the abstract sculpture. In addition, with Lola, he founded a puppet company. With their puppets, they toured the way through Mexico. Together with Leopoldo Méndez, Manuel Maples Arce and Fermín Revueltas Sánchez, he founded the artist group Los Estridentistas.

After the separation of Lola Fuego in 1936 married María Fernández Galán Germán. His first marriage, born in 1922 daughter Mireya Cueto was also a well-known puppeteer and writer and dramaturge.
