U 255 was a German U- Boat Type VII C of the Navy, which was used during the Second World War.
History
U 255 was the sinking of ten merchant ships, including research and expedition vessel Akademik Shokalskiy, ( 47.529 BRT) a warship and the damage of another one of the most successful German submarines in Arctic waters. When Nordmeergeleitzug PQ 17 it sank three freighters with 18 386 GRT. On September 23, 1942 south of Jan Mayen was an attack by a " Catalina " aircraft of the Royal Navy, in which the boat was badly damaged and had to return it to its home port. On February 3, 1943 recessed from the Convoy RA 52 freighter Greylock ( 7460 BRT). In another air raid on March 11, 1944 two crew members were injured.
The boat was made after a new damage in August 1944 out of service and used in April 1945 as a minelayer. On 19 May 1945, the Royal Navy captured the boat, then it was sunk as one of 116 by the Royal Air Force aircraft in Operation Deadlight.
