Gianni De Michelis

Gianni De Michelis (* November 26, 1940 in Venice) is an Italian politician and non-attached Members of Socialisti Uniti per l'Europa ( a forerunner of the NPSI ) in the European Parliament.

Education and work

De Michelis comes from a Methodist family and graduated in 1963 in Industrial Chemistry at the University of Padua. He was from 1963 to 1972 first as an assistant and later as a university lecturer in general chemistry worked. From 1972 to 1980 he was a lecturer at the University of Venice in general chemistry worked. From 1980 to 1990, an associate professor joined.

Political career

De Michelis belonged since 1976 to the party executive of the PSI, where he had responsibility for the organization of the party at national level. At that time, he defined himself as an anti -Communist and anti- Christian Democrats. From 1992 to 1993 he was Deputy Secretary-General of his party. From 1997 to 2001 he is the General Secretary ( = President) of his party.

Between 1964-1980 and 1990-1995 De Michelis was in Venice City Council with responsibility for urban planning. Between 1974 and 1994 he was also a member of the Camera dei deputati. From 1987 to 1988 he was chairman of his party faction here.

As Minister for industrial investments he belongs 1980-1983 Arnaldo Forlani cabinets, Giovanni Spadolini and amine gates Fanfani on. In 1986, he was temporarily working cabinet minister Bettino Craxi. From 1988 to 1989 he held the office of Deputy Prime Minister. After De Michelis belonged until 1992 to the Cabinet as Secretary of State. In this capacity, he worked for the European Union, together with its counterparts in the Balkans conflict. Repeatedly, he travels to the "clover " to Belgrade to prompt Slobodan Milošević to comply with ceasefire agreements concluded for Slovenia and Croatia.

When the PSI as a result of massive corruption in the environment of Bettino Craxi collapsed in the early 1990s, De Michelis founded from the bankruptcy estate of the right wing of the PSI 1997, a small party, the Partito Socialista called. In 2001 he founded together with Bettino Craxi's son then Bobo the NPSI, which belongs to the Casa delle Libertà right coalition that supports Silvio Berlusconi.

MEP De Michelis is a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and is a substitute for the Judiciary Committee, member of the delegation for relations with the People's Republic of China and Deputy for the delegation to Parliamentary Assembly of the Euro - Mediterranean region. In addition, he serves on the Subcommittee on Security and Defence. Since 2003, De Michelis is a member of ASEM Task Force.

From 1984 to 1992 De Michelis was chairman and since 2001 he is member of the Board of the Aspen Institute in Italy. Since 2002 he is Chairman of the Institute of Latin America and the Middle East IPALMO.
