Gijsbert de Leve

Gijsbert de Leve ( born August 25, 1926 in Amsterdam, † 19 November 2009) was a Dutch mathematician who dealt with stochastic ( Markov ) decision-making and was considered one of the founders of operations research in the Netherlands, specifically stochastic operations research.

De Leve earned his graduate degree in mathematics and physics in 1954 at de University of Amsterdam and received his doctorate in 1965 with Jan Hemelrijk at the University of Amsterdam ( Generalized Markovian Processes). He was also a student of John Runnenburg. In 1965 he became associate professor in 1974 he became Professor of Operations Research at the University of Amsterdam. In 1991 he became Professor Emeritus.

He focused in particular on applications of operations research in business. With Jacob Willem Cohen (1923-2000), he established the territory stochastic operations research in the Netherlands.

His doctoral include Karel Lenstra January ( b. 1947 ), former director of CWI, Awi spring Gruen (Columbia University) and Henk Tijms (University of Amsterdam).
