Gil Puyat

Gil J. Puyat ( born September 1, 1907 † 23 March 1980) was a Filipino high school teachers, politicians and entrepreneurs.

Biography

The son of Don Gonzalo Puyat, one of the first Philippine big business, studied post-school economics at the University of the Philippines, earning next in his father's business experience in financial operations, capital, production and labor management.

After graduating, he later became a professor of economics at the University of the Philippines and at the same time also a member of the Rotary Club of Manila.

His entrepreneurial acumen and foresight in the management of family businesses achieved the attention of then President Manuel Quezon during a time when the country was predominantly agricultural and Quezon advocated industrialization. 1940 Puyat was therefore appointed by President Quezon at the age of just 33 years as Dean of the Faculty of Business Economics (College of Business Administration) from the University of the Philippines and thus became the youngest dean of the UP of all time.

For his economic research and his teaching, he has received several awards during that time. The Business Writers' Association of the Philippines named him Business Leader of the Year in 1948 and the Association of Red Feather Agencies voted him the Civic Leader of the Year 1949. Besides he received in 1953 the badge of the Community Chest of Greater Manila for his outstanding services as founder, first president and first chairman of this company. The Philippine Institute of Public Opinion ( PIPO ) awarded him an honorary certificate for his leadership in business, industry, civil society and politics, and for his prominent services to the youth.

In November 1951 he was elected a member of the Senate and was one of this until its dissolution after the imposition of martial law by President Ferdinand Marcos in 1973. Most recently, he was from 1968 to 1973 and President of the Senate.
