Giovanna Debono

Giovanna Debono ( born November 25, 1956 in Victoria, Gozo ) is a Maltese politician of the Nationalist Party, and since 1998 Minister for Gozo.

Biography

Giovanna Debono is the daughter of Coronato Attard, who was 1962-1987 deputy of the PN in the House of Representatives. You even graduated after school a teaching degree at the University of Malta, from which she graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Education). Subsequently, she worked as a teacher until 1987.

Mrs Debono started her political career in 1987 when she was first elected as a candidate of the Nationalist Party for Members of the House of Representatives. In the elections of 1992, 1996, 1998, 2003 and 2008, they were each re-elected as members of parliament. In parliament, she represents the constituency since 1987 13, which includes Gozo and Comino.

On April 17, 1995, she was appointed by Prime Minister Edward Fenech Adami, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Social Development and held this office until the election defeat of the Partit Nazzjonalista in October 1996. In this capacity, she participated in the 4th UN World Conference on Women in Beijing, 1995 in part.

After re- election victory of the PN they summoned Prime Minister Fenech Adami on September 8, 1998 as Minister for Gozo in his cabinet. This office she took over then under his successor Lawrence Gonzi, the Prime Minister is 2004 since March 23. This makes it next to the Minister of Education and Culture, Dolores Cristina, the second female minister in Gonzis government.

As Minister for Gozo she sits down especially after the accession of Malta to the European Union for the solution of specific problems of the island is a like for example through the promotion of traditional wind powered water pumps but also for the treatment of biodegradable waste. Here to promote, among other things, tourism projects, such as for divers.

In the parliamentary elections on 8 March 2008, it reached 5,633 votes in her constituency more votes than Prime Minister Gonzi, Deputy Prime Minister Tonio Borg and Finance and Economy Minister Tonio Fenech.
