Giovanni Battista Gaulli

Giovanni Battista Gaulli ( born May 8, 1639 Genoa; † April 2, 1709 in Rome ), also called Baciccio, Il Baciccio or Baciccia, was an Italian painter of the Baroque. He is especially known as a fresco painter and portrait painter and worked mainly in Rome.

Life

Giovanni Battista Gaulli lost his parents in 1657 because of a plague epidemic. He was a pupil of Luciano Borzone in Genoa. Around 1653 he moved to Rome, where he was a friend of the famous painter and sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini was close. This gave him many commissions in Rome.

1662 he was admitted to the Accademia di San Luca, and was President in 1674 ( Principe ) of these art Academy.

Artistically he was initially inspired, among others, by Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck.
