Giovanni Battista Salvi da Sassoferrato

Giovanni Battista Salvi, called Sassoferrato ( Sassoferrato * 1609, † April 8, 1685 in Rome) was an Italian painter of the Baroque.

Salvi, named after his hometown came early to study the works of Raphael in Rome. Later he went to Naples in order, inter alia, the work of Annibale Carracci and (especially Guido Reni) to study its radius. He was most active in Rome, where he died on 8 April 1685.

Work

He painted almost exclusively Madonna, praying and those with the sleeping child. His pictures show an intimate and true, albeit weak sensation and are painted in bright colors with care. In many churches and galleries in Italy and in most collections of foreign works are represented by Sassoferrato.
