Giovanni Bellini

Giovanni Bellini (c. 1437 in Venice, † November 29, 1516 ibid ), also Giambellino, sometimes called the German-speaking Gian Bellin, was a Venetian painter.

Life and work

Giovanni Bellini came from a Venetian family of painters. He was the illegitimate son of Jacopo Bellini, his brother was Gentile Bellini. His early work was influenced by the painting of his brother Andrea Mantegna, who was married to his sister Nicolosia. Through him, Gentile and Giovanni Bellini learned especially at work stays in the Padua school of Francesco Squarcione know. They have also been influenced by Donatello's work, they also met in Padua. Counting of the outstanding masters in the northern Italian culture room, he founded with his brother Gentile the Venetian school of painting of the early Renaissance. A large part in his work take devotional images as a Madonna and Child. As a role model for his Madonnas were Greek and Byzantine icons, which were widespread in Venice, and the stereotypes he changed. These images exude a strong emotional and poetic relationship between mother and child. The Pietà and the Sacra Conversazione is a further focus on the devotional images. Influenced by Antonello da Messina since his stay in Venice from 1474 to 1476 Giovanni Bellini is next to his father Jacopo and brother Gentile crucial for the development of the portrait in the Venetian painting while retaining the aloofness of the early Venetian portraits. The sitters are now represented mainly in three-quarter profile. Also famous is applied in the background representation of the landscape, the greenish- golden color was an essential feature of Venetian painting. In place of the drawing hardness of the early Renaissance now occurs especially in his late work the picturesque softness and the colors get warmth and luminosity thanks to the acquisition of oil colors of the Dutch painting, Antonello da Messina introduced in Venice. Meet the strong demand for its images comply, he used his large workshop, out of which also went Giorgione, Titian and many other famous artists, already found for repeated production image solutions. He received orders from Isabella d' Este and Francesco Gonzaga.

His main works include the triptych Madonna Enthroned with the Four Evangelists ( 1488 ) in the sacristy of the church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice, which Albrecht Dürer, who thought he was the greatest painter of his time to his painting inspired the four apostles. After numerous public commissions he is in 1483 as the official painter of the Venetian Republic in order to devote himself to painting in the Sala del Consiglio in the Doge's Palace Maggior can. Many of his images burned in the Doge's Palace. In 1993, a statue of the Madonna and Child (1480 ) from the Chapel of the Madonna dell'Orto Valier was stolen in Cannaregio and not retrieved until today.
