Giovanni Giacomo Gastoldi

Giovanni Giacomo Gastoldi (* around 1556 in Caravaggio ( Lombardy ); † January 4, 1609 in Mantua ), was an Italian singer and composer of the late Renaissance and early Baroque.

Life

In Lombardy born Gastoldi came with his father Manfredo Gastoldi to Mantua, where he was a chorister at the Basilica of Santa Barbara received his musical education and studied theology. 1572 Gastoldi was subdeacon, deacon in 1574 and a year later he was ordained a priest. Gastoldi received benefice, so that was connected to the obligation to give the choirboys singing lessons.

As a member of the chapel, he participated in the composition of the Duke Guglielmo Gonzaga ( which is also itself active as a composer ) desired repertoire. A 1582 by Cardinal Charles Borromeo, undertaken attempt to bring Gastoldi to Milan was unsuccessful. From Giovanni Giacomo Gastoldi originate melody and set the Balletto A Lieta Vita, which in the German language under the title is joy (EC 398; German text of Cyriacus Schneegaß ) In thee was known as a hymn.
