Giulio Bizzozero

Giulio Bizzozero ( born March 20, 1846 in Varese, † April 8, 1901 in Turin ) was an Italian pathologist and histologist.

Life

Since 1862, he studied at the University of Pavia Medicine, where he now worked in experimental physiological laboratory. Later he continued his studies in Zurich and Berlin. He came among others, with Rudolf Virchow, Rudolf Albert Kölliker and Heinrich Frey in contact with whom he remained all his life in connection. Already during his studies put the 16 -year-old before a first release. In 1866 he received his doctorate and became head of the laboratory. The following year, he replaced Paolo Mantegazza, who went to Florence, and was thus 21 years held the chair of General Pathology, Pavia. In 1872 he was appointed to Turin where he performed to a full professorship in pathology. In 1885 he was elected Rector of the University of Turin. In 1888 he was elected a member of the Scholars Academy Leopoldina. He was a member since 1881, from 1892 to 1893 and President of Academy of Sciences. After he was diagnosed with iridocyclitis and no longer could the microscope, he devoted himself to hygiene and health policy issues. He died in 1901 of pneumonia.

Research and teaching

Even as a student recognized Bizzozero the blood- forming property of the bone marrow. His later research focused on the hematology, particularly hematopoiesis (blood formation) and hemostasis ( blood clotting), and also various tumors, the histology of the molluscum contagiosum, blood formation in birds and the histology and physiology of the endocrine glands. In December 1881, he discovered the importance of thrombocytes ( platelets), which had been described as the third corpuscular component of the blood already in 1865 by Max Schultze.

Among the scientists trained by him include Camillo Golgi, Guido Tizzoni (1853-1932), Gaetano Salvioli (1853-1888), Pio Foà (1848-1922) and Camillo Bozzolo ( 1845-1920 ). He founded the prestigious journal Archivio di Scienze MEDICHE.
