Giulio della Rovere

Giulio della Rovere Feltrio ( born April 5, 1533 Urbino, † September 3, 1578 in Fossombrone ) was an Italian Cardinal, owner of several dioceses and archdioceses as well as Duke of Sora.

Life

Giulio della Rovere Feltrio was provided as the youngest son of Francesco Maria della Rovere I., Duke of Urbino, for a church career. Pope Paul III. appointed in July 1547 the first 14-year time being a cardinal in pectore, but already in April 1548 he was introduced to his office and was the titular church of St. Peter in Chains, the same year he was elected bishop of Urbino and Recanati. In the next few years he served as papal legate at Urbino and Perugia and participated in the conclaves of 1555 ( Marcellus II and Paul IV ), 1559 ( Pius IV ) and 1565 ( Pius V ) part.

In March 1566 he became archbishop of Ravenna, the same year he received - even though almost two decades cardinal and bishop - his ordination. In his death in 1578 he became Archbishop of Urbino and so took his first ecclesiastical office again. He died in Fossobrone in the Marche and is buried in Urbino in the convent of Santa Chiara.

Progeny

With Leonora of Ferrara Giulio Feltrio had several natural children who were legitimized by papal bull in 1572:

  • Ippolito della Rovere (* 1554 in Castel Leone; † in Rome 1620), Margrave of San Lorenzo in Campo married to Isabella Vitelli from the house of Orsini. They had several children: Livia della Rovere ( born December 16, 1583 San Lorenzo in Campo, † July 6, 1641 in Castel Leone ) married in 1599 its 36 years older cousin Duke Francesco Maria II della Rovere. She was the last Duchess of Urbino.
  • Giulio della Rovere (* 1587 in San Lorenzo in Campo, † 1636 in Rome)
  • Lucrezia della Rovere (* 1589 in Urbino, † February 18, 1652 in Rome), married with Marcantonio Lante, Duke of Bomarzo. They founded the still existing family Lante Montefeltro della Rovere
