Fossombrone

Fossombrone is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 9826 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Pesaro and Urbino in the Marche region. The municipality is situated approximately 25 kilometers south-southwest of Pesaro and Urbino about 14 kilometers east of the Metaurus.

History

The name of the village is a corruption of the ancient settlement Sempronii Forum, which was named after the tribune Gaius Sempronius Gracchus. Earlier pervaded the place the Via Flaminia. Even today, the antique treasures, such as the statue of Vertumnus (God of the seasons ), the Furlo Pass ( a Roman tunnel that was built under Emperor Vespasian ) and two bridges over the Metaurus that were built under Trajan and Diocletian.

Early Fossombrone was already a bishop 's seat ( since 109).

552 it came here to the battle of Busta Gallorum that led by a Eastern Roman army to destroy the Ostrogoths. Until 1198 the town was part of the Duchy of Spoleto, then it came under papal rule. When the Dukes of Urbino then acquired the territorial sovereignty, flourished Fossombrone. In 1631 the town was again part of the Papal States until the Risorgimento 1860.

Traffic

Fossombrone Located on the Strada Statale 73bis ( European route 78 ) or at the section of the Strada Statale 3 Via Flaminia. The railway line from Fano to Urbino on Fermignano to which there was a railway station in Fossombrone is closed since 1987.

Fossombrone maintains a partnership with the French community Entraigues -sur -la -Sorgue in the Vaucluse.
