Giuseppe Pozzobonelli

Giuseppe Pozzobonelli ( born August 11, 1696 Milan, † April 27, 1783 ibid ) was Archbishop of Milan and Cardinal.

Life

Pozzobonelli studied in his native city of Milan, then in Pavia in 1722 and Ph.D. in civil and canon law. On December 23, 1730 he was ordained a priest in Milan and was prefect of the local clergy. In this leadership position, he visited numerous monasteries and seminars and acquired with the restoration of the Ambrose Library a lasting merit. After the death of Archbishop Carlo Gaetano Stampa Pozzobonelli was first vicar.

Pope Benedict XIV finally appointed him Archbishop of Milan. He received his episcopal consecration of the Pope on July 21, 1743 in person. Just two months later, on September 12, he took him to the College of Cardinals. As a cardinal priest him the titular church of S. Maria in Via has been assigned. After Benedict's death in 1758, Cardinal Pozzobonelli took part in the conclave for the election of a successor. The new Pope Clement XIII. pointed him in the same year to the titular church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva. 1769 tried the now 73 -year-old Archbishop, to resign, but Clement XIII. refused Pozzobonellis resignation. After Clement's death, he took part in the conclave of 1769. 1770 Pozzobonelli was Cardinal Proto priest. He asked again to be entpflichtet from his offices, and turned this time to the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa. As his successor, he proposed the Prefect of the Apostolic Palace and later Cardinal Giovanni Archinto. However, the Empress took the request not to. Reasons of age, he did not take 1774-1775 also in the election of Pius VI. in part. Cardinal Pozzobonelli died eight years later, aged 86, and was buried in the Cathedral of Milan.
