Prehistory

The first "Motor Sport Event " at Goodwood was a private mountain race, which in 1936 hosted the racers Frederick Gordon - Lennox, 9.Duke of Richmond and grandfather of the present Lord March, on his property.

In the late 1930s, the British Air Ministry had commandeered near Westhampnett land by the Duke of Richmond, to build an alternate landing site for the RAF Tangmere airfield. After the early 1940s, the first Hawker Hurricane associations had moved to Westhampnett, a ring road was built of concrete, which was later replaced by asphalt due to the wet soil. Race

The Festival of Speed ​​is more a tribute to the motor sport as a serious race, but which forms the background of the event. It is, unlike the Goodwood Revival, not on the track, but on a mountain route before Goodwood House and a rally track in the woods instead. The Sunday Times calls it " a cross between the Grand Prix of Monaco and Royal Ascot ."

On display are racing and sports cars, racing motorcycles and rally cars from all eras of motorsport history - from pre-war models to modern Formula 1 cars, as well as many current and former racing aces (2007: Stirling Moss, Stig Blomqvist, Phil Hill, Jochen Mass, Lewis Hamilton and many, many more). What makes the Festival of Speed ​​is that visitors can enter all the paddock throughout the event, to see the cars and talk to the drivers.

The race is held in the form of a mountain race. The route runs 1.16 miles ( 1.86 km ) up a hill and has nine curves. Since 2007 is for rally cars, a separate competition held on a rally course.
