Gorak Shep

Development region

Gorak Shep is the last permanently inhabited place (municipality Khumjung ) before Südaufstieg to Mount Everest via the Valley of Silence ( " Western Cwm "). It lies at an altitude of 5207 m and right on Khumbu Glacier, which flows east of the village of Mount Everest Coming in a southwesterly direction. The village consists of some hostels ( lodges ).

The village takes its name from the so-called Gorak chickens. These partridge -like animals are the subject of a small legend: After eating poisonous plants, they fly up to the height of the summit of Mount Everest, to then get rid of the poison again in free fall.

Immediately adjacent to an ancient lake bed on the outskirts rises the 5675 meters high Kala Patthar, one of the most popular vantage points in the Khumbu.
