Goshavank

Goshavank (Armenian Գոշավանք ) is a former Armenian monastery from the 12th to the 13th century and is located in the village of Gosh ( Tavush province ). The well-preserved building is no longer used in church and is a popular tourist destination. Goshavank is known for the particularly finely crafted Chatschkare. Goshavank was built on the site of the monastery Nor Ghetik, which had been destroyed in an earthquake in 1188. Involved in the reconstruction was the famous scholar and cleric Mkhitar Gosh. All buildings of the complex are built together, except for the Hripsime Chapel, which is located within view on the opposite hillside.

The main building is the 1197 dedicated to the Mother of God Church ( Surb Astuacacin ) with the same time completed Gawit on its west side. In 1237, a chapel for Gregory the Illuminator was added to the south. In the southeast, the free-standing Church of Saint Gregory ( Surb Grigor ) remained, a scaled-down replica of the main church.
