Grand River Valley AVA

Grand River Valley AVA ( recognized since 21 November 1983) is a wine region in the state of Ohio. The area is located in the administrative units Lake County, Geauga County and Ashtabula County in the northeast of the state.

The appellation is a subregion of transnational vineyard Lake Erie AVA and is only 3 km (2 mi) from the Grand River and 22 km ( 14 mi) from the shores of Lake Erie.

The rigors of winter is moderated by heavy snowfall (→ Lake effect snow), as the snow layer protects the lower part of the vines.

The overall cool climate viticulture affects the choice of grape varieties. In addition to very hardy and early maturing French hybrid vines or local new varieties, the choice is increased to improve early maturing European noble grapes to the quality of the wines.
