Ohio wine

Viticulture in Ohio called viticulture in the American state of Ohio. According to U.S. law, each state and each county, by definition, is a protected designation of origin and need not be recognized as such by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

First vineyards were created with American vines. Viticulture has been documented since the year 1823, when the horticultural expert Nicholas Longworth docked surfaces with the varieties Alexander and Isabella. 1825 was followed by land with the Catawba grape which developed until 1860 the most popular variety in the state. The city of Cincinnati has developed into one of the most important wine trade places in the United States.

During the time of prohibition, however, the wine of the region came to a standstill and recovered only very slowly. Today, more than 40 wineries are registered again and it defined five appellations.
