Alabama wine

Viticulture in Alabama called viticulture in the U.S. state of Alabama. According to U.S. law, each state and each county is a protected designation of origin by definition and does not need to be recognized by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives as such.

Since 2002 the vineyard in Alabama experienced a significant upswing. This year, the previously existing restrictions on wineries were relaxed by means of an agrarian reform. The winemakers concentrate on growing French hybrid vines and American vines of the family of Vitis rotundifolia ( Muscadine called ). Vine of the family of Vitis vinifera ( the so-called European noble grapes ) are often infested by the Vine disease Pierce's disease. So far there are in Alabama no better defined appellation in the form of an American Viticultural Area.
