Maryland wine

Viticulture in Maryland designated wine production in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. According to U.S. law, each state and each county is a protected designation of origin by definition and does not need to be recognized by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives as such.

First wine plantings there have been in the 16th century by order of Cecilius Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore, son of George Calvert, 1st Baron Baltimore. Despite the long tradition of wine-growing while almost 400 years could hardly develop. It was not until 1945, Philip Wagner with the Broody Vineyards, the first winery in the state.

Much of the currently operating wineries are located in the north-west of Baltimore, near the Chesapeake Bay and the Piedmont Plateau. So far, three sub-regions were defined in the form of a American Viticultural Area.
