Roussanne

Roussanne is a rather rare white wine grape that is grown primarily in the French Rhone Valley, in the Savoie and Provence, but also in Tuscany in the province of Lucca, Australia and California (→ Viticulture in California). It is called in Tuscany Monte Carlo. In Savoy, it is called Bergeron. The name describes the color of ripe Roussanne, rust red grapes. The global population is estimated to nearly 1,500 acres. Louis Levadoux, a French Ampelograph associated to the Roussanne grape varieties family " famille the Sérines ", which also includes the varieties Syrah, Mondeuse, Viognier, Marsanne or Altesse. Accordingly, the variety came from the southeast of France.

The wines are vinified from Roussanne acid- rich and have a floral aroma. They are very long shelf life and then develop mineral notes. However, the variety is susceptible to gray mold and powdery mildew and places high demands on the location. In the northern Rhone Valley, it was therefore largely displaced from the Marsanne blanche. Along with this they found there in the white Hermitage, Crozes -Hermitage and Saint -Joseph entrance. Elsewhere it is blended with Chardonnay and Vermentino. Varietal wine they will be expanded by some winemakers in Châteauneuf -du- Pape, as in the " Vieilles Vignes " of Château de Beaucastel. In 2007, a vineyard area of 1,307 hectares was raised (,) in France. Small stocks are also known in Switzerland ( 1.7 acres, as of 2007, source: Office fédéral de l'agriculture OFAG )

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. She is white wool with hairy ruby approach. The bubbly young leaves are still woolly hairy and already strongly sinuate.
  • The large and thick leaves are indented five lobes and deep. The petiole is closed lyre -shaped. The blade is serrated blunt. The large teeth are set wide in comparison to the varieties. The leaf surface (also called lamina ) is vesicular coarse.
  • The drum-shaped grape is small to medium in size and dichtbeerig. The roundish berries are small and white to golden yellow color with a tendency to rust-red when fully ripe.

The grape ripens about 20 days after Chasselas, and is thus in an international comparison almost early ripening although the maturity even in the northern Rhone Valley is not always achieved. Compared to the powdery mildew and the raw rot is hardly resistant. The yield is low and also fluctuate. Roussanne is a variety of the noble vine (Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphrodite flowers and is thus self- fruiting. When the wine-growing economic drawback is avoided, no return delivered to male plants need to grow.
